The present invention relates to a process and apparatus for producing polystyrene foam, as well as to foam blocks and boards (such as plates and panels) produced therewith. CO2 is used as the blowing agent, and a first and second control agents are injected into the melt, the first control agent being designed to dissolve and cool the melt and consisting of ethanol, while the second control agent is only designed to cool the melt and consists of H2O2, the injected amount of ethanol being just sufficient for achieving the highest possible dissolution of CO2 in the melt and the injected amount of H2O2 being such that the foaming produced by ethanol is minimised. The related apparatus comprises arrangements for conditioning and feeding the blowing agent and control agents into the melt. The blocks and boards exhibit dimensional stability and good self-extinction features.

On utilise du CO2 comme agent moussant avant d'injecter dans le mélange plastifié un premier agent et un deuxième agent de contrôle. Le premier agent a pour but de dissoudre et de refroidir le mélange et est constitué d'éthanol. Le deuxième agent a pour objet de refroidir uniquement le mélange plastifié et est constitué de H2O2. La quantité d'éthanol injectée est suffisante pour assurer la dissolution maximale du CO2 dans le mélange plastifié. La quantité d'H2O2 est suffisante pour assurer le maintien à une valeur minimale du moussage provoqué par l'éthanol. L'installation comprend des systèmes de conditionnement et d'alimentation en agent moussant et en agent de contrôle dans le mélange plastifié.Les blocs et les plaques présentent une bonne stabilité dimensionnelle et de bonnes caractéristiques d'auto-extinction.
