A process and apparatus are described for continuously extruding high molecular weight polymer materials. It comprises feeding the polymer material into a continuous extrusion apparatus, this apparatus comprising rotatable wheel means constituting a movable member and defining an endless groove around the wheel means for receiving polymer material to be extruded, a shoe member overlying part of the length of the groove, a stationary abutment portion associated with the shoe member and projecting into the groove, this abutment having a tapered face spaced from the bottom of the groove with the bottom and sides of the groove and the abutment tapered face defining an extrusion aperture through which the polymer material is extruded with the tapered face shaped to cause the polymer material to leave the groove in a direction tangential to the wheel. This wheel is rotated to effect rapid compaction of the polymer material and force the compacted polymer through the extrusion aperture to thereby form a continuous extrusion which moves tangentially away from the wheel.
