ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Process for producing thin layers, particularly thin layers of gel, wherein liquid layer material is introduced between a first mould surface and a second mould surface of a mould, said mould surfaces being arranged parallel to each other and at a small spacing from each other, characterized in that a first mould part having the first mould surface and a second mould part having a second mould surface are moved parallel relative to each other from an initial position in which the mould surfaces overlap slightly and are arranged parallel to each other and at a small spacing from each other, into a final position in which the mould surfaces are located opposite each other, and in that, in the initial position and during the parallel movement, the liquid layer material is fed into an opening in the interstice formed between the mould surfaces, in the region of a front edge of the first mould surface perpendicular to the direction of displacement and located opposite the second mould surface even in the initial position. The process produces thin, bubble-free layers.
