ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process and an apparatus are disclosed for purifying a fluid medium with a predetermined minimum radiation dose of ultraviolet radiation so as to permit optimum utilization of the incident radiation. The disclosure describes various embodi- ments of photoreactors which have at least two irradiation chambers with a window therebetween. Ultraviolet radiation is introduced into one of the chambers at a side opposite the window so that it passes through that chamber, through the window and into the other chamber. The fluid medium to be puri- fied is passed through the chambers and subjected to the radia- tion while in the chambers. The disclosure provides for optimum utilization of the ultravoilet radiation over a wide range of ultraviolet transmissions of the media to be irradiated.
