A process and apparatus are described for generating nuclear effects in a medium which is subject to an inwardly directed spherical compression wave. A centrally located plasma is generated by an ionizing current struck between a pair of electrodes and allowed to begin expansion. A shock wave is generated at a peripheral spherical surface centered on the plasma location. The shock wave encounters the expanding plasma which is then subject to inwardly directed pinch. By timing of the plasma generation and the shock wave generation the plasma can be heated by the pinch effect to temperatures and confinement pressures necessary for x or nuclear radiation or fusion of the medium nuclei as the case may be. Repetitive generation of x-radiation can be obtained from the plasma even in the absence of the pinch shock wave. Significant total doses from such repetition are achieved. When the energizing frequency of the plasma producing current is raised, the radiation pulses overlap and there is continuous output of radiation. Amplification of the repetitive radiation pulse from the plasma can be obtained by timing successive shock wave generation so that such successive waves encounter the plasma at times which enhance its radiation output.
