Abstract of the Disclosure Organic waste is composted whereby it is brought into repeated sliding layer contact with an air current. This contact is provided for in an inclined, rotating cylinder. As the cylinder rotates air is introduced into the mass of waste material from within the mass, below the surface thereof. Gas within the cylinder is with- drawn therefrom from above the surface of the mass from locations distributed along the length of the cylinder. The means for introducing air into the mass may be a perforated pipe as may be the means for extracting the gas.
