A process for removing sulfur dioxide from flue gas, in particular from flue gas (R) obtained in a waste incineration plant, uses a scrubbing solution including alkali metal hydroxide. The scrubbing solution includes alkali metal sulfate after scrubbing and is subjected to electrodialysis, giving an aqueous alkali metal hydroxide solution and a dilute sulfuric acid.
