Abstract of the Disclosure A process for producing freely foaming polymer in a trough, wherein the cross section of the polymer is regulated by- creating a gas flow between the surface of the foaming polymer and a regulating hood disposed above the surface of the polymer to create a pressure differential between the edges of the trough and the center thereof, and regulating the pressure differential by modifying the amount and/or cross section of the gas flow, bringing the pressure differential by coarse regulation to a working point having a maximum value of 10 mm. water column, introducing false air to maintain differential within a range of about ? 0.1 mm. water column about the working point, wherein a signal is derived from the continuous measurement in the fine regulation of the flowing gas and this signal is employed to modify the position of an air inlet flap valve on the regulating hood relative to said hood, said flap valve serving for the introduction of the false air, and in coarse regulation a posi- tion signal is generated by the flap valve and this position sig- nal is used as the signal which regulates the position of the regulating hood relative to the surface of the polymer.
