ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process is provided for removing iron-containing components from water which comprises the steps of: (1) aerating the water to introduce air in a sufficient amount and under conditions of high shear and high turbulence to form colloidally dispersed iron hydrates having a surface charge from substantially all of the iron present; (2) maintaining the aerated water under a pressure within the range from about 10 to about 500 psi; (3) passing the aerated water within the said pressure range through a bed of particulate material having a surface charge capable of attracting, removing and collecting the colloidally dispersed iron hydrates; and (4) recovering water having low iron residuals. An apparatus for removing iron from water by the above process is also described.
