A B S T R A C T A process, and apparatus wherein this process maybe operated, for removing dissolved gaseous monomer from a solid/liquid dispersion formed in the preparation of polyvinyl chloride by suspension or emulsion polymerization, which process comprises flowing the dispersion, at a temperature of from 30 to 90°C and in a vacuum of 30 to 700 mbars for 2 to 20 seconds, as a layer 0.5 to 5 mm thick over inclined surfaces which make an angle of 45 to 80° with the vertical, and the gaseous monomer liberated is removed directly from the phase boundary between the dispersion and the gas space.
