A process and apparatus are described for impreg- nating a porous web with a thermosettable resin. The process involves the use of resin application means com- prising a large-diameter rotating roller (4) on which is deposited a liquid-form thermosettable resin in essen- tially uncured state; passing a porous web (2) in coun- tercurrent contact with the thermosettable resin so as to transfer the thermosettable resin into the porous web; passing the resin-containing fibrous web in countercur- rent contact with at least one small-diameter rotating roller (11, 12); and passing the resin-containing fibrous web to a heating zone (13) to partially cure the resin and form a prepreg. The process is particularly suited for application of a solventless resin formulation to a glass web in the preparation of a prepreg for an electrical lam- inate. The apparatus includes resin application means comprising a large-diameter rotating roller (4); means for applying a liquid-form thermosettable resin onto the rotatable roller, means for advancing, in a countercur- rent direction with respect to the direction of motion of the roller, a fibrous web (2) to the roller and in con- tact with the thermosettable resin thereon and thence to a resin cure zone; and at least one small-diameter roller (11, 12) between the large-diameter roller and the resin cure zone (13) to apply heat to smooth the surface of the resin-containing web and to promote resin penetra- tion thereof.
Ce procédé et cet appareil permettent d'imprégner de résine thermodurcissable une âme poreuse. Le procédé comprend l'utilisation de moyens d'application de résine comportant un rouleau rotatif (4) à grand diamètre sur lequel on a déposé une résine thermodurcissable sous forme liquide, essentiellement dans un état non cuit, et il consiste à faire passer une âme poreuse (2) en contact à contre-courant avec la résine thermodurcissable afin de transférer cette résine dans l'âme poreuse, à faire avancer l'âme fibreuse contenant la résine pour qu'elle entre en contact à contre-courant avec au moins un rouleau rotatif (11, 12) de petit diamètre, puis à faire passer l'âme fibreuse contenant la résine dans une zone chauffante (13) afin de cuire partiellement la résine et former un support préimprégné. Ce procédé est particulièrement approprié à l'application d'une formulation de résine dépourvue de solvant sur une âme en verre dans la préparation d'un support préimprégné destiné à un stratifié électrique. L'appareil comprend des moyens d'application de résine comprenant un rouleau rotatif (4) à grand diamètre, des moyens d'application sur ce rouleau d'une résine thermodurcissable sous forme liquide, des moyens destinés à faire avancer, à contre-courant par rapport au sens de rotation du rouleau, une âme fibreuse (2) vers ledit rouleau afin de la mettre en contact avec la résine thermodurcissable située sur le rouleau, et afin de la diriger ensuite vers une zone de cuisson de la résine; l'appareil comprend également au moins un rouleau de petit diamètre (11, 12) placé entre le rouleau à grand diamètre et la zone de cuisson (13) de la résine, et destiné à appliquer de la chaleur afin de lisser la surface de l'âme contenant la résine et favoriser la pénétration de celle-ci dans l'âme.
