A process and an apparatus are disclosed for impregnating a porous web with a thermosettable resin. The process involves the use of resin ap- plication means comprising a rotating roller (4) on which is deposited a liquid-form thermosettable resin in essentially uncured state, passing a porous web (2) in countercurrent contact with the ther- mosettable resin so as to transfer the thermoset- table resin into the porous web, exposing the resin- containing porous substrate to an elevated temper- ature lower than that maintained for partial cure; and passing the resin-containing fibrous web to a heating zone to partially cure the resin and form a prepreg. The process is particularly suited for appli- cation of a solventless resin formulation to a glass web in the preparation of a prepreg for an electrical laminate. The apparatus includes resin application means comprising a rotating roller (4); means for applying a liquid-form thermosettable resin onto the rotatable roller; means for advancing, in a counter- current direction with respect to the direction of motion of the roller, a fibrous web (2) to the roller and in contact with the thermosettable resin thereon and thence to a resin cure zone; and means (13) be- tween the rotatable roller and the resin cure zone (14) to apply heat to the resin-containing substrate.
Ce procédé et cet appareil permettent d'imprégner de résine thermodurcissable une âme poreuse. Le procédé comprend l'utilisation de moyens d'application de résine comportant un rouleau rotatif (4) sur lequel on a déposé une résine thermodurcissable sous forme liquide, essentiellement dans l'état non cuit, et il consiste à faire passer une âme poreuse (2) en contact à contre-courant avec la résine thermodurcissable afin de transférer cette résine dans l'âme poreuse, à exposer le substrat poreux contenant la résine à une température élevée, inférieure toutefois à celle nécessaire à une cuisson partielle, puis à faire passer l'âme fibreuse contenant la résine dans une zone chauffante pour cuire partiellement la résine et former un support préimprégné. Ce procédé est particulièrement approprié à l'application d'une formulation de résine dépourvue de solvant sur une âme en verre dans la préparation d'un support préimprégné destiné à un stratifié électrique. L'appareil comprend des moyens d'application de résine comprenant un rouleau rotatif (4), des moyens d'application sur ce rouleau rotatif d'une résine thermodurcissable sous forme liquide, des moyens destinés à faire avancer, à contre-courant par rapport au sens de rotation du rouleau, une âme fibreuse (2) vers ledit rouleau afin de la mettre en contact avec la résine thermodurcissable située sur le rouleau, et afin de la diriger ensuite vers une zone de cuisson de la résine, ainsi que des moyens (13) placés entre le rouleau rotatif et la zone de cuisson de la résine (14) et destinés à appliquer de la chaleur sur le substrat contenant la résine.
