ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE For the anaerobic treatment of sewage the sewage solids are homogenized and the sewage is then passed upwardly through a biological sand contact bed at thermophilic temperature to putrefy the solids and form sewage gas, after which the sewage is used to preheat the sewage to said temperature and to return the putrefied solids to the sand contact bed.
