"PROCESS AND APPARATUS FOR THE BIOLOGICAL PURIFICATION OF WASTEWATER" ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to a process and apparatus for the biological purification of wastewater in a reactor in the presence of biomass, and with the use of carrier materials, such as polyurethane foam par- ticles, as a settling surface for the biomass. The carrier materials are employed in an aera- tion system in an oxygenation tank or reactor of the type wherein surface aerators, immersed aerators, or injectors are employed. Typically the carrier material would be subjected to high shear forces which in turn would cause a reduction in its structural strength. Thus, to prevent such carrier materials from being damaged while maintaining them in the reactor for the biomass independently of the type of aeration employed, a zone free of carrier material is provided in the reactor. The wastewater from the carrier-free zone is aerated and then employed to aerate all of the wastewater in the reactor.
