In a process for the thermal conversion of combustible energy-containing residues having varying particle sizes at temperatures above the melting point of mineral constituents of the residues to produce solids and off gases by reacting residues with oxygen and/or air at atmospheric pressure, the residues are fed via a feed apparatus into a upper area of a high-temperature reactor together with an air stream or oxygen stream and brought to reaction. The residues are converted to liquid slag and gas in the high-temperature reactor. The liquid slag is dammed in a melting bath situated in a lower area of the high-temperature reactor. The fine-particle content of the residues is essentially converted to slag and gas in a vertically disposed free space of the high-temperature reactor. The coarse-particle content of the residues is essentially converted to slag and gas in and on the melting bath. The liquid slag produced flows beneath a damming element and, above an overflow element is removed from the high-temperature reactor together with the gas produced via an outflow hole of the high-temperature reactor.
