ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process and an apparatus for the two-stage com- bustion of waste materials in a carbonization zone for the understoichiometric combustion of a supply of combustion material and in a subsequent after- burning zone for the complete combustion of the carbonization gases. The heating of the combustion material in the carbonization zone is carried out by radiation released from the after-burning zone and the carbonization gases are led away from the lower end of the supply of combustion material in a downward direc- tion and introduced into the after-burning zone by natural convection.
