ABSTRACT An apparatus for treating a moving web is disclosed. The apparatus comprises a deflectable roll and a backing roll, the deflectable roll being substantially cylindrical to define an axis and having means to distort the periphery thereof towards or away from the roll axis. One of the rolls (the deflectable top roll) is covered with a resilient material, for example poly- urethane, which heats up when deformed. At least one temperature sensor provides a reference signal dependent upon the temperature of a selected point on the resilient material a control means controls the distortion of the deflectable roll in response to the reference signal. The control means controls hydraulic support members to distort the shell of the deflectable roll. In a preferred embodiment a nip of substantially uniform instantaneous pressure is provided.
