The present invention relates to a process for the production of DME characterized by the step of dehydrating methanol in vapor phase in the presence of a catalyst comprising, as a active component, a silicoaluminophosphate (SAPO) molecular sieve having a minimum medium acidity of 0.5-1 mmol for gram of dry sieve at a temperature in the range from 160°C to 280°C. The invention also relates to said catalyst as well as processes for its preparation and regeneration.
