The invention concerns a process, a facility and a continuously operating press for the manufacture of material board. In the process of the invention, just prior to reaching the reaction starting temperature of the bonding agent in the press, for the curing of the centre of the material to be pressed, i.e, after the centre T M of the material to be pressed has reached approximately 85% to 95% of the respective temperature required for curing, the surface of the mat of material to be pressed is subjected to a cooling process. The pressing/cooling section L K of the press, is of a length sufficient for the curing of the mat of material to be pressed as well as for a predetermined, non-destructive steam pressure in the interior of the finished panel. The press is therefore designed in' such a way that the pressing section (L) is divided into a pressing/heating section (L H) and a pressing/cooling section (L K), whereby the pressing/cooling section (L K) is variably extendable from the pressing/heating section (L H) by means of variable pressure plate cassettes (15) which can be cooled and are located within a variable section (M), as well as vice versa, so that the pressing/heating section (L H) is variably extendable from the pressing/cooling section (L K).
