Considerable energy cost savings may be available in a paper fiber beating process in which the paper fibers are mechanically stressed (beaten) between relatively moving beating tools. The paper fibers may be successively beaten in at least two series connected beating stages that includes a primary beating stage for pre-beating the fibers and a secondary beating stage for beating the pre-beaten fibers. The primary beating stage may include beating tools having at least one beating surface with a porous abrasive beating face. The secondary beating stage may include beating tools having fiber-contacting beating strips, i.e., cutter sets, which work the paper fibers via relative motion between the fiber-contacting beating strips.
