The invention relates to a process and a device for casting metal rods or the like in bag casting using a ingot mould (1) which sinks into a liquid bath (5) as it is being filled with the casting metal. The ingot mould pipe (1) is filled with casting metal through a filling pipe (11). The lower end of the filling pipe, which is lowered in advance into the ingot mould pipe, has an outlet opening (12). The ingot mould pipe is suspended with its lower end at approximately the same level as the liquid bath (5) or above until this introduction is almost complete. The casting metal is allowed to flow through the outlet opening (12) of the filling pipe (11) into the ingot mould pipe (1). Simultaneously, the ingot mould pipe is lowered into the liquid bath (5) at a speed which bears a predetermined ratio to the speed at which the casting metal rises in the mould pipe (1).
