The invention relates to a process for coating silicon carbide fibres with a titanium-based alloy by means of plasma spraying, the titanium-based allay being sprayed onto the silicon carbide fibres (7) by means of an electrode-free high-pressure plasma (3), and the high- pressure plasma (3) being generated in a microwave- or radiowave-transparent working tube (2) with a gas inlet opening (8) and a gas outlet opening (9) by ignition, of a process gas which has been introduced into the working tube (2) at a pressure p .gtorsim. 1 bar and being maintained by means of absorption of microwaves or radiowaves and being gassed into the working space (5) as a plasma jet (6) through a nozzle (4) arranged at the gas outlet opening (9) of the working tube (2).
