The explosion of containers with explosive liquids can be prevented by filling the tank with filler elements produced from metal strips. In order to function properly, thefiller should have the shape of small spheres filling in the container. The disclosure described as method of making the elements. The strip made of expanded material is compressed transversely to its longitudinal direction to form a strand of generally round cross section when it passes through a calibration opening (4). After passing through this opening (4), the strand is mechanically further compressed at intervals transversely to its longitudinal direction (3). Then it is further transported discontinuously in the longitudinal direction (3) through a guide (5) of round cross section until the front part of the strand projects into a mould. The strand (2) is then severed at a point between the guide (5) and the mould (7), and a section of the strand remaining in the mould is compressed by a die (8) which is introduced into the mould (7) to form the desired filler element.
