A process for manufacturing shaped parts out of metal by pressing a thixotropic metal billet (20) by means of a piston (16) out of a holding chamber (12) into a mould cavity (30) is such that, at least up to the point in time (tE) at which the metal enters the mould cavity (30), the said mould cavity (30) is forcibly evacuated. A corresponding thixoforming unit is such that the mould cavity (30) is connected to a vacuum chamber (48). Shaped parts having reduced gas porosity can be manufactured using the process.
