-12- ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process and apparatus for depositing a high-quality metallic coating on a steel strip. In this process, one or several metals or metal alloys are continuously evaporated in a thermal plasma from nonoxidizing gas and transformed into the highly ionized state of the thermal plasma. Subsequently, the metal ions contained in the plasma are electrostatically deposited on the steel strip at a pressure elevated by 100 Pa to 5000 Pa relative to the ambient pressure. During coating, the steel strip is held at a uniform temperature and coated at a rate of 40 m/min to 600 m/min.
