For the production of pig iron from metallic ores, the metallic ores and any required additives flow downwards through a reduction unit through which hot reduction gas containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen flows upwards. The reduction product is removed at the lower end of the reduction unit and is supplied to another unit for ulterior treatment. The reduction gas is generated in a gas generator by partial oxidation of carbon carriers or by splitting natural gas or petroleum. In particularly for processing metallic ores containing at least a high proportion of powdery and/or granulated metallic ores, the metallic ore and any required additives are led downwards in the reduction unit over a series of slanted and staggered cascade gas distributing trays. The metallic ore and any required additives are sorted into fractions according to their grain size. The coarse grained fraction of the metallic ores and any required additives are introduced in the top section of the system of gas distributing trays, the finely grained fraction of metal oxides is introduced in the intermediate area of said system and the finely grained fraction of any additives to be added is introduced together with the finely grained fraction of the metal oxides in the lower section of said system.
