The invention relates to a process for reducing the concentration of water-soluble acid gas pollutants contained in fumes from an incinerator, wherein the fumes are cooled by indirect heat exchange with a cold fluid, producing a condensate that contains acid pollutants. After the cooling phase, the fumes, which still contain acid pollutants, are washed using the condensate as washing liquid.
