ABSTRACT The invention relates to a process and a device for separating suspended matter in flowing liquids in order to produce a purified partial stream of liquid which is low in suspended matter. In order to separate a partial liquid stream low in suspended matter continuously from a particle-bearing stream of liquid, it is proposed in accordance with the invention that deliberate deflection or diversion of the flow be used to produce a zone of turbulence under the surface of the liquid, the zone permitting only heavy and inert particles to maintain their course and surrounding an area largely free of the flow and turbulence, into which the partial stream of liquid composed of the lighter and therefore purer molecules pours, so as to be measured or removed from this compartment continuously.
