Abstract of the Disclosure There is provided a process for the detection of pathogens, such as bacteria, fungi and viruses, in blood in the presence of an anticoagulant agent, wherein the pathogen is separated in an extracorporeal circulation of the blood with a biocompatible adsorbent which selectively binds the pathogen, whereafter the pathogen is detected by bacterio- logical, mycological, virological or electron microscopic methods. A particular device for the detection of pathogens in blood includes a column, both ends of which are open, which contains a biocompatible adsorbent which selectively binds the pathogen, the adsorbent being held in place in the column by means of filters, grids or meshes with slipped-over caps, the caps having openings with connections for tubes for admitting or removing blood. The tubes for removing blood can also be provided with a transfusion device and a filter.
