ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The disclosure describes a process for the manufac- ture of high quality steels with analyses within a very close range of tolerances from soled raw materials. It includes the smelting refining and alloying of steel melts by melting down each of the solid raw materials utilized in the process in a first vessel: at least partially refining the resulting melt while it is in the first vessel and under a slag; tappinq the melt and slag into a second vessel, deslagging the melt by discharging it from the second vessel into a third vessel without the slag; and thereafter alloying and desulfurizing the melt to produce the desired high quality steel. The apparatus used for this process comprises a furnace including heating means by which the raw materials are melted down and at least partially decarburized and dephosphorized and the resulting melt is heated to metal; a transfer ladle positioned to receive the melt produced in the furnace, the transfer ladle including means to discharge the metal: means to separate the slag component from the metal component of the melt a receiving ladle positioned to receive the metal component of the melt, discharged from the transfer ladle: means to agitate a melt contained in the receiving ladle a transporting unit by which the receiving ladle and its contents is moved to a plurality of locations at which it is selectively engaged in a vacuum-tight relationship with one of the following: (a) a hood under which vacuum treatment and degassing may be effected: (b) a vacuum lifter through which alloying additions can be made while the contents of the receiving ladle remains under a vacuum: and (c) a heating unit under which the receiv- ing ladle and its contents may be heated: a vacuum producing unit: and means to operatively connect the vacuum producing unit to each of the hood, the vacuum lifter and the heating unit. The process and apparatus of this invention enable the production of quality steels with very small deviations in composition.
