2069506 9108440 PCTABS00005 In the process of the invention, a pulse of acoustic energy is generated in a sensor (20) and directed at a reflecting object (24) as well as at an auxiliary reflector (e.g. 30), and the distance to the object determined from the difference in reflection times. In order to increase the accuracy of measurement, a second auxiliary reflector (32) is placed at a known distance R from the first auxiliary reflector (30), the time difference (t2 - t1) between the reflections from the two auxiliary reflectors (30, 32) determined and the speed of sound v in the medium calculated from the known distance R separating the auxiliary reflectors. The value thus obtained for the speed of sound in the medium is then used to calculate the distance to the object.
