125/84 ABSTRACT Solid or liquid particles contained in suspension in a gas stream (1 ) are removed by means of an electric field, whereby the flow is direct- ed past sources of elementary particles, mainly ion sources (24, 25), which are simultaneously field electrodes, whereby the suspended par- ticles are charged in a bipolar manner, such that approximately half of the particles are positively charged (2) and the other half negatively charged (9), and which are Forced by the electric field (3) to migrate across the gas stream into a preferred neutralization zone (23) where they are concentrated, discharged, and partially agglomerated and coagulated. Subsequently, the particle-enriched and particle-depleted partial gas streams (31, 32) thus formed are separated and treated further in accordance with the operating requirements. Thereby the remaining gas stream (37) maximally loaded with particles is fed into a particle-removal device (43, 46) where their withdrawal (45) occurs. Considerable reduction in the gas volume carried along up to the fine- cleaning stage. Decrease in the expenditure pertaining to the apparatus of the electrofilter by a factor of two or more (Figs. 10 and 16).
