ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: An improved process for disinfecting medical apparatus in an enclosure by the action of formaldehyde fumes subsequently neutralized by ammonia fumes. The improvement comprises evacuating the formaldehyde fumes from the disinfection enclosure by the injection into the enclosure of a rinsing gas preheated to a temperature such as to avoid the polymerization of formaldehyde and formation of a parasitic deposit of trioxy- methylene, guiding the formaldehyde fumes towards an auxiliary chamber communicating with the enclosure and causing the neutralization of the formaldehyde and the formation of hexa- methylene tetramine to take place in the chamber by contacting the formaldehyde fumes with ammonia fumes for a period of time sufficient to ensure neutralization. The process enables one to avoid the deposit of cristalline hexamethylene tetramine inside the disinfected apparatus. The invention is also directed to an apparatus for carrying the above process, which comprises a dis- infection enclosure receiving the medical apparatus and provided with a source of formaldehyde fumes, a source of rinsing gas communicating with the enclosure and operative to evacuate the formaldehyde fumes from the disinfection enclosure, heating means for raising the temperature of the rinsing gas to a predetermined value at which the polymerization of formaldehyde and formation of a parasitic deposit of trioxymethylene are avoided, an auxiliary neutralization chamber communicating with the enclosure and provided with a source of ammonia fumes, the volume of the neutralization chamber being such as to allow the ammonia fumes to spread and come into contact with the formaldehyde fumes for a period of time sufficient to ensure neutralization, a pump connected to the disinfection enclosure and to the neutralization chamber and adapted to convey the formaldehyde fumes from the disinfection enclosure to the neutralization chamber, and a non-return valve allowing the formaldehyde fumes to be conveyed to the neutralization chamber and opposing the reverse return movement from the neutralization chamber to the disinfection enclosure. The invention is particularly suitable for disinfecting artificial respirators.
