Procédé et installation de coupage d'une pièce en acier inoxydable, en acier revêtu, en aluminium ou en alliage d'aluminium par mise en oeuvre d'un moyen optique transparent ou réfléchissant pour focaliser un faisceau laser et d'un gaz d'assistance dudit faisceau laser. Le moyen optique est de type multi-focale et est choisi parmi les lentilles, les miroirs et leurs combinaisons. Le gaz d'assistance est de l'oxygène ou un mélange azote/oxygène contenant au moins 90% d'azote. Le procédé de l'invention permet d'obtenir une augmentation des performances de découpe de 40% par comparaison avec un procédé de coupage laser classique.
