ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An improved process and apparatus for preparing cyanuric chloride by trimerizing cyanogen chloride in the presence of chlorine. The cyanogen chloride is produced by electrolytically reacting a solution of hydrogen cyanide or a salt thereof with chloride ion in an anode chamber of an electrolytic cell at a pH of less than 4. The apparatus for performing the process of this invention comprises an elec- trolysis cell having separate cathode and anode chambers, inlet means for supplying anolyte to the anode chamber and catholyte to the cathode chamber, discharge means for the separate discharge of the reaction products from the said cathode and anode chambers, a separator for separating the mixture leaving the anode chamber into a gas phase and a liquid phase, a drier for said gas phase, and a trimerization reactor for trimerizing cyanogen chloride and means for recovery of cyanuric chloride therefrom.
