DESCRIPTIVE ABSTRACT During their reprocessing, irradiated nuclear fuels are sheared and then dissolved in a hot nitric solution, which is then settled in a clarifier (10). According to the invention, the dissolving fines collected at the bottom of the clarifier are broken up before being transferred to a vitrification site. For this purpose the fines are passed to a transfer tank (16) and then made to flow in a loop (20) comprising a pump (24) and a dilacerating device (26). The transfer to the vitrification site then takes place by passing through an e.g. ultrasonic fines screening machine or sifter (30). The dilacerating device (26) can be of the ultrasonic type, the venturi tube type, or of the type having a venturi tube and baffle system. A prior dilaceration can take place within the clarifier (10) . Fig. 1. B 10505 GP
