In a process for the production of steel strip, a continuously cast steel strip (2) which consists of a solidified casting shell (3) and a liquid core (4) is reduced in thickness in a roll deformation and is then rolled. In order to avoid undesired fluctuations in thickness, to improve the structure and to simplify the roll deformation unit, a steel strip billet of 40-80 mm thickness is cast, roll deformed to 15-40 mm thickness and 2-15 mm residual liquid core in a maximum of three steps and is then guided to complete solidification.
