K 5406 A B S T R A C T The hot gas from a coal gasifier is cooled in the gasifier outlet by applying a gas shield along the wall of the outlet, which gas shield cools the wall and the hot gas and which gas shield pre- vents sticky ash particles from hitting the wall. Upon cooling of the hot gas the ash particles loose their stickiness.
