A B S T R A C T A process and a sensor for measuring as well directly and continuously as in a non destructive and in a contactless manner the thickness of an electrically conductive coating deposited on a moving elongated ferromagnetic substrate with the help of the determination of the losses due to the Joule effect of the Foucault currents induced in the coated product by an alternating magnetic field. One chooses such an excitation frequency of the alternating magnetic field that the natural penetration of the Foucault currents into the material of the coating is close to or inferior to the aimed at coating thickness and one varies the measuring frequency as a fonction of the conductibility of the coating metal as compared to that one of the substrate to be coated. The measuring sensor comprises an oscillator composed of an LC circuit and of a variable-gain amplifier connected in closed loop.
