ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Treatment of water containing contaminants, by removing substantially all of the contaminants therefrom the contaminants forming emulsions, colloids and fine droplets in the water phase. The process comprises passing the contaminated water through a pre-filter capable of retaining coarse and/or suspended materials, and allowing the pre-filtered water to exit therefrom. In a second step, the pre-filtered water is passed through a hydrophobic oleophilic absorbent partitioning filter which has been impregnated with a substance which strongly partitions the contaminants in favor of the impregnating substance, thereby removing substantially all the contaminants that can be removed by absorption. In a third step, the remaining contaminants are removed through adsorptive post-filtration employing suitable media, one of which may be the non-impregnated hydrophobic oleophilic fiber medium which may subsequently be used to constitute the impregnated partitioning filter. Other typical examples of adsorbent filter media include activated charcoal and diatomaceous materials. A system including a combination of pre-filter, partitioning filter and post-filter is also disclosed.
