ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention provides a process for the Hofmann rearrangement of .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated amide polymer by haloamidating the .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated amide polymer with a hypohalite in a medium of aqueous alkali solution and subjecting the result- ing haloamide to rearrangement reaction, characterized by con- ducting the haloamidation reaction at -10 to 10° C and the rearrangement reaction at -10 to 15° C.
