Methane can be used as a source for producing hydrogen or hydrogen equivalents in a biological process using mesophilic or thermophilic bacteria of the order of the Thermotogales, e.g.Thermotoga maritima. Hydrogen can be produced as such, or as a reducing equivalent for the reduction of various compounds such as sulphur compounds. Especially, the methane oxidation can be used for anaerobically reducing sulphate to sulphide using methane as the predominant or sole electron donor, in coculture with sulphate-reducing micro-organisms.

Le méthane peut être utilisé comme source de production d'hydrogène ou d'équivalents hydrogène dans un processus biologique utilisant une bactérie mésophile ou thermophile de l'ordre des <i>Thermotogales</i>, par exemple. <i>Thermotoga maritima</i>. L'hydrogène peut être produit tel quel ou sous forme d'équivalent de réduction destiné à la réduction de divers composés tels que des composés de soufre. On peut, en particulier, utiliser l'oxydation du méthane pour réduire en anaérobie du sulfate en sulfure en utilisant du méthane comme donneur d'électron principal ou unique, en culture avec des micro-organismes réducteurs de sulfate.
