ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process is disclosed for applying a dense, hard, wear-resistant layer of cermets or ceramic material to a metal object. A matrix material and the hard particles are sprayed on a metal object whereupon the sprayed-on layer is consolidated at high temperature and pressure. The consolidation is carried out by isostatic compacting at a temperature of at least 1000°C and a pressure of at least 1000 bars for a period of at least 1/2 hour. The invention includes metal objects prepared by the disclosed process.
