14-0075 A PROCESS FOR BONDING NONWOVEN WEBS ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for bonding nonwoven webs of organic fibers having excellent textile-like softness, hand, and drape is disclosed. A web of uncompacted organic fibers is prepared, pressed between a pair of rolls, wherein one roll contains boss portions, a bonding solvent is transferred to the embossed roll, and at the roll nip, a limited quantity of solvent is applied to the web from the boss portions, and the web is simultaneously compressed in the areas under the boss portions, thereby forming a pattern of discrete bond sites. Compression reduces capillary spacing between the fibers which causes an increase in capillary retention of the limited solvent in the area under the boss portions. The rolls can be heated to enhance fiber fusion in the bond site, bond site uniformity, and removal of solvent.
