A B S T R A C T A PROCESS FOR CARBONYLATING METHANOL TO ACETIC ACID AND/OR METHYL ACETATE A process for carbonylating methanol to acetic acid and/or methyl acetate characterized in that methanol is reacted with carbon monoxide in the presence of a catalyst comprising: a catalytically active amount of a homogeneous Group VIII metal compound, a promoter RZ wherein R is H or C1-C3-alkyl and Z is chlorine, bromine or iodine and a Group IA-, IIA- or transition metal iodide or car- boxylate; and one or more ligands containing at least one elec- tron-rich N atom.
