ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for carrying out radical-enhanced combustion of fuel in an engine according to which hydrocarbon radicals generated during one combustion cycle in an engine working chamber are seeded in the charge supplied to the working chamber during a subsequent cycle. The radicals are stored and protected in an air chamber within the piston beneath a piston cap element between combustion cycles. Combustion is initiated very close to the radical-enhanced autoignition temperature of the charge, and ignition may be by spark or by compression effects, depending upon the temperature of the charge. The temperature of the charge in turn is controlled by controlling the air to fuel ratio of the charge. If the cycle is carried out in the autoignitionmode by compression effects, the cap material is selected to yield best power output for the fuel used by, and the compression ratio of, the engine. The radicals consist of a mixture of pre-flame and post-combustion radicals and are seeded into the intake charge by wave interaction between the working chamber and the air chamber across a restricted orifice.
