A process for the selective production of ethylene by vapor phase reaction of acetic acid over a hydrogenating cata-lyst composition to form ethylene in a single reaction zone is disclosed and claimed. In an embodiment of this invention reaction of acetic acid and hydrogen over either a copper supported on iron oxide, copper-aluminum catalyst, cobalt supported on H-ZSM-5, ruthenium-cobalt supported on silica or cobalt supported on carbon selectively produces ethylene in a vapor phase at a temperature in the range of about 250°C to 350°C.

L'invention porte sur un procédé pour la fabrication sélective de l'éthylène par réaction en phase vapeur d'acide acétique sur une composition de catalyseur d'hydrogénation pour former de l'éthylène dans une zone de réaction unique. Dans un mode de réalisation de cette invention, une réaction de l'acide acétique et d'hydrogène sur un cuivre supporté sur de l'oxyde de fer, un catalyseur de cuivre-aluminium, du cobalt supporté sur H-ZSM-5, du ruthénium-cobalt supporté sur de la silice ou du cobalt supporté sur du carbone produit de façon sélective de l'éthylène dans une phase vapeur à une température dans la plage d'environ 250°C à 350°C.
