An improved batch process for the pyrolytic conversion of woody and herbaceous plant material is provided which yields charcoal, on a dry weight basis, in yields ranging from about 35 % to about 50 %, having volatile matter content of about 25 % or less, and fuel value of 13000 BTU/pound. The batch process can be conducted in two hours or less per batch with virtually instantaneous reloading for subsequent batches without substantial cooling of the reactor (10) utilized for the process and without exposing the hot processed charcoal to air or oxygen sufficient to cause combustion upon removal from the reactor (10). The reactor (10) is imbedded in insulation material (11). Carbonaceous material (13) is loaded into canister (14) and admitted into the reactor (10).
Procédé amélioré de traitement par lots, destiné à la transformation pyrolytique de matières végétales herbacées et ligneuses, et permettant d'obtenir du charbon selon des rendements en poids à sec compris entre 35 % et 50 %, présentant une teneur en matières volatiles ne dépassant pas 25 %, et d'une valeur combustible de 13000 BTU/livre. Ce procédé de traitement par lots peut être réalisé en deux heures ou moins par lot, un nouveau chargement pratiquement instantané des lots suivants étant effectué sans refroidissement sensible du réacteur (10) utilisé dans ce procédé, et sans que le charbon chaud obtenu soit suffisamment exposé à l'air ou à l'oxygène pour qu'une combustion se produise au moment du déchargement du charbon hors du réacteur (10). Celui-ci (10) est encastré dans un matériau isolant (11). Les matières charbonneuses (13) sont chargées dans un récipient (14) et introduites dans le réacteur (10).
