Abstract The present invention relates to a procedure for applying a plurality of coatings on metallic material that is in the form of a skein, preferably in the form of strip or wire, by applying different layers of metallic coating materials as the material that is to be coated passes continuously through a system that consists of a plurality of immersion baths that are filled with molten coating material and arranged one after the other. In order to be able to produce new corrosion-resistant coatings with improved properties and enhanced surfaces, it is proposed that the metallic material that is in the form of a skein be guided rectilinearly through the system as a result of adjustable bath temperatures and/or bath levels of the different molten coating materials, under controlled temperature and time parameters. The system that is used to do this is characterized by a plurality of coating tanks (4a, 4b) that are arranged in series, with passage channels (12) for the skein of metallic materials (8) beneath the level (h) of the surface of the immersion bath, the passage channels (12) being closed off by magnetic hydrodynamic seals (13). 14
