Abstract This invention provides a new gelatin capsule formulation and subcoating for producing soft gelatin capsules having better mechanical strength and an improved capacity for adhering to known coating compositions, particularly enteric coating compositions. The finished capsule shell formulation comprises gelatin 65%-70%, glycerin 22%-25% and water 8%-10% and the subcoating is a suspension of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. The subcoating may also be used to manufacture improved enteric coated hard gelatin capsules.
